Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Berkley

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Assonet Neck — annexed by Berkley in 1799, according to Dighton's town history.
  • Wednesday Transfer Station — 3R North Main Street, open Wednesdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., sticker required.
  • Household construction material only — the Transfer Station charges $80 for a full pickup or trailer of construction material and $150 for a full load of roofing, concrete, asphalt or tile.
  • Permitted haulers — the Board of Health posts a yearly list of permitted rubbish haulers.

What comes out of Berkley properties

Roofs in 10s and 20s, yard and brush clean-ups in 15s and 20s, remodels in 20s, estate clean-outs in 30s, new construction in 30s and 40s, and a 10 or 15 for concrete, brick and dirt — heavy loads are limited to the smaller boxes. The Transfer Station takes household construction material by the pickup load, one day a week; a whole remodel is simpler in a roll-off. MassDEP bans asphalt pavement, brick and concrete, metal, wood (from landfills), clean drywall, mattresses and textiles (since 1 November 2022), whole tires, large appliances, TV and monitor picture tubes and lead-acid batteries from disposal (310 CMR 19.017), so mixed construction loads go to a C&D handling facility that sorts them. MassDEP says even one mattress can fail a load — tell us before you load a mattress or an appliance.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Berkley

Who may haul — the rule that matters: Berkley's Board of Health issues its rubbish permit under M.G.L. c.111 §31A; the application asks for a copy of the hauler's liability insurance and a list of trucks, and the form states no fee. We found no exclusive franchise. We're licensed and insured.

Placement: we could not read Berkley's bylaws, so this page states no Town street or dumpster rule. Keep the container on your driveway or property and ask the Town before using a street. Give us clear placement instructions and you don't need to be home for the drop-off.

State highways: nothing may be placed on a MassDOT state highway without MassDOT's written permit (M.G.L. c.81 §21), and MassDOT has no dumpster or container permit type — so on a state highway the container goes on private property. Not every stretch of a numbered route is state-owned, so we check the exact address.

Knocking something down: Massachusetts requires an asbestos survey by an asbestos inspector before demolition or renovation work (310 CMR 7.15(4)), and asbestos removal needs a MassDEP notice filed ten working days before work starts by the licensed abatement contractor. MassDEP's construction/demolition notice (AQ 06) does not apply to residential buildings with fewer than 20 units. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if the survey finds any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Berkley

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the location, what you are clearing — a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard, a job site — roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

You get a flat-rate quote whenever possible that covers delivery, pickup, disposal, the standard rental period and an included weight allowance. If a smaller box does the job we will say so. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on a flat, stable surface rather than the lawn. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home.

  4. Step 4: Load it on your schedule

Keep it level with the top edge or below and keep the banned items out — paint and solvents, oils and fuel, chemicals, batteries, tires, propane tanks and gas cylinders, medical waste, asbestos, mattresses and textiles, and fridges or other large appliances. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We haul it and dispose of it right

The load is covered and goes to an approved facility, with metal, concrete, asphalt, clean wood and yard waste recycled through Massachusetts facilities whenever possible. You get your driveway back the way you left it.
