The 10 yard container in Norton
The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one weekend. At about 14 feet long it is the shortest container we run, so it suits tight spots — a short driveway, a narrow pad beside the garage, a corner of a job site. The trade-off is volume: it holds about three pickup truck loads, or roughly 50 to 70 standard trash bags, and cabinets and drywall fill it fast.
Where the 10 yard earns its keep is weight. Concrete, brick, asphalt, stone and dirt reach the limit long before a big box looks full, and the 10 includes about one to two tons. That is why heavy materials are generally limited to the smaller containers — a smaller box keeps the load within safe hauling limits. Tell us what is going in and we will help you plan a load that stays inside the weight allowance.
Space needed
a flat, stable spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved area or compact gravel, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to get in and set it down safely, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and wires
Small remodels, single-room cleanouts and the heavy stuff
A bathroom tear-out — tile, tub, vanity, a bit of drywall — sits comfortably in a 10 yard. So does a garage or attic cleanout, a small kitchen job, the shingles, underlayment and flashing off a smaller house or garage roof, or a patch of concrete, brick, tile or asphalt coming up. It works best for dense, heavy debris rather than large bulky items.
It suits Norton because nobody else hauls that kind of debris away for you. We found no Town trash collection in Norton — the Town's own recycling sheet points residents to private trash services — and the Highway Department's recycling Saturdays take listed items such as appliances, tires and scrap metal, not renovation debris. Norton's Board of Health also bars dumping rubbish or debris in a public way, within 150 feet of one, or within 100 feet of an abutting property (Reg. Ch. 12). Anything more than a few bags of scraps is what a 10 yard on the driveway is for.
The weight line on a 10 yard
About one to two tons — 2,000 to 4,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Household junk never gets close. A 10 filled to the rim with concrete, dirt or shingles can, so spread it evenly, keep it level with or below the top edge, and tell us it is coming. If the load goes over the included weight allowance, an overage fee may apply based on the total weight at the disposal facility, and we explain the weight guidelines up front. Every load leaves covered: Massachusetts law requires a truck carrying rubbish or debris to have its load fully and adequately covered (M.G.L. c.85 §36).
Suitability
Is the 10 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 10 yard for
- Bathroom or small kitchen remodel
- Garage, attic or single-room cleanout
- Roofing tear-off on a smaller house or garage roof
- Concrete, brick, asphalt, stone and tile within the weight limit
- Tight driveways and limited placement space
Pick a different size for
- A whole-house cleanout — that is a 20 or a 30
- Bulky furniture from several rooms
- Paint, solvents, fuel, oil, hazardous chemicals, tires or batteries
- Fridges, freezers and other appliances containing Freon
Placing a 10 yard container on a Norton-area property
It needs a flat, stable spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved area or compact gravel, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to get in and set it down safely, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and wires. In Norton we found no Town permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: the Town bylaw requires written permission from the Select Board before part of a public way is used for rubbish or building material during building work, on condition that the spot is lit from sunset to sunrise, guarded with a railing, restored afterward and covered by an agreement to indemnify the Town (§135-7), and no obstruction may be left blocking travel on a street or sidewalk (§135-8). Route 123 (Old Colony Road) and Route 140 are state highway, where MassDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. The Norton Board of Health also requires every dumpster in town to carry the company name, phone number and an ID number and allows no refuse on the ground around it (Reg. Ch. 11 §11.4). Other towns have their own rules — Taunton wants dumpster locations approved by its Board of Health, Easton asks the customer for a permit for each temporary dumpster, Sharon wants dumpsters on an impervious surface, and Plainville keeps roll-offs 5 feet back from the edge of a public way. Check your HOA too. Plywood under the wheels adds protection, and protective boards may be available on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?
The container is about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. Pick a flat, stable spot such as a driveway, a paved area or compact gravel, allow enough room for the roll-off truck to get in and set it down safely, and check that there are no low branches or wires overhead. Move cars, trailers and equipment out of the way, and if you will not be home, mark the spot so the driver places it where you asked. In Norton, keep it on your own property: using any part of a street for rubbish or building material during building work needs written permission from the Select Board first (Bylaw §135-7).
Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?
Yes — it is one of the main reasons people rent one. Concrete, brick, asphalt, dirt and stone are generally limited to the smaller dumpsters for safety and transportation reasons. Spread it evenly, keep it level with the top edge or below, and tell us roughly how much there is. Massachusetts bans asphalt pavement, brick and concrete from landfill disposal, so a clean load of it goes for processing rather than burial.
How long do I get it for?
Most rentals include a standard 7-day rental period, and longer rentals may be available depending on your project. Need more time? Call and we can often extend it for an additional daily or weekly fee, depending on availability. If it fills before the job is done, we can swap it. Finished early? Call and we will arrange an earlier pickup.
Is it the cheapest option?
It is our smallest container, and we quote every job on its own rather than publishing prices. The flat rate depends on the delivery location, the type and weight of the debris, how long you keep it and scheduling, and it covers delivery, pickup, disposal fees, the standard rental period and the included weight allowance, with no hidden charges. Call (508) 952-9763 for an exact quote. If the job grows, we can swap it for a bigger box.
