The 20 yard container in Norton

When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we often end up — it is one of the most popular sizes we run, and for many residential and small commercial projects around Norton it is the all-purpose option. It handles a whole-home cleanout, a kitchen or bathroom renovation, a roof, a landscaping overhaul or light demolition without being so tall that loading turns into a chore. It holds about six pickup truck loads, or roughly 110 to 130 standard trash bags.

It is about 22 feet long, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits comfortably in most residential driveways and job sites, and the 4.5-foot sides keep it easy to load by hand.

Space needed

a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved area or compact gravel, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to get in and set it down safely, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and utility wires

Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts

Furniture, boxes and household junk from a whole house; drywall, lumber, cabinets and flooring from a multi-room remodel; shingles and underlayment off a roof; branches and brush from a big landscaping job; doors, trim and windows — these are 20 yard jobs. Tell us the roofing square footage and we help estimate the weight before delivery.

It is also a good box for light demolition and mixed construction debris — framing, doors, windows. Massachusetts treats that load differently from household trash: asphalt pavement, brick, concrete, metal, wood and clean gypsum wallboard are banned from landfill disposal (310 CMR 19.017), so mixed construction loads go to a construction and demolition handling facility that meets MassDEP's minimum performance standard, where those materials are separated out. Clean drywall has to be pulled out for recycling before a mixed load can be transferred. Asphalt shingles without asbestos are not a banned material. Avoid mixing large amounts of concrete or dirt with household junk — a smaller box or a split load is safer and usually better value.

What the 20 yard includes

Flat-rate pricing that covers delivery, pickup, disposal fees within the included three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — and the standard rental period, with no hidden charges. Dense materials can reach the weight limit before the dumpster looks full, so plan on weight as well as volume, load heavy material evenly, keep debris level with the top edge, and tell us when you book if you think you will go over.

Suitability

Is the 20 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 20 yard for

  • Whole-home cleanouts
  • Multi-room renovations — drywall, lumber, cabinets, flooring
  • Roofing projects
  • Landscaping cleanup — branches, brush, outdoor debris
  • Light demolition — framing, doors, windows

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly concrete, dirt, brick or tile (use a 10 or 15)
  • Major construction and demolition — that is a 30 or 40
  • Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus room for the truck
  • Asbestos, paint, chemicals, fuel, tires, batteries, medical waste or Freon appliances

Placing a 20 yard container on a Norton-area property

It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved area or compact gravel, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to get in and set it down safely, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and utility wires. In Norton we found no Town permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: the Town bylaw requires written permission from the Select Board before part of a public way is used for rubbish or building material during building work, on condition that the spot is lit from sunset to sunrise, guarded with a railing, restored afterward and covered by an agreement to indemnify the Town (§135-7), and no obstruction may be left blocking travel on a street or sidewalk (§135-8). Route 123 (Old Colony Road) and Route 140 are state highway, where MassDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. The Norton Board of Health also requires every dumpster in town to carry the company name, phone number and an ID number and allows no refuse on the ground around it (Reg. Ch. 11 §11.4). Other towns have their own rules — Taunton wants dumpster locations approved by its Board of Health, Easton asks the customer for a permit for each temporary dumpster, Sharon wants dumpsters on an impervious surface, and Plainville keeps roll-offs 5 feet back from the edge of a public way. Check your HOA too. Plywood under the wheels adds protection, and protective boards may be available on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?

About six, or roughly 110 to 130 standard trash bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.

Can a 20 yard fit in a Norton driveway?

In most — it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and the truck needs room to reach the spot and set it down. Put it on the driveway, a paved area or compact gravel rather than the lawn. If there is truly no room on the property, a Norton street placement during building work needs the Select Board's written permission first, with lights at night, a railing or guard and an agreement to indemnify the Town (Bylaw §135-7), and nothing may be left obstructing travel on a street or sidewalk (§135-8). Driveway first.

What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?

Most rentals include about three to four tons, depending on the debris type. Shingles, tile, concrete and dirt are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.

How long is the rental?

Most rentals include a standard 7-day rental period, and you can often extend it for an additional daily or weekly fee if the job runs on. If it fills early, ask for a swap; if you finish early, call and we pick it up early.

Can I get a 20 yard the same day?

Often. Same-day or next-day delivery may be available depending on scheduling and availability, and the 20 yard is one of the most requested same-day sizes. Call early in the day — before noon gives the best chance. The phone is answered around the clock, but we do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
