The 30 yard container in Norton
The 30 yard takes up the same 22 by 7.5 feet of ground as the 20 — the extra volume is all height. That makes it the natural pick when a job makes a lot of bulky debris but the site has no more room: a whole-house remodel, an estate or move-out cleanout, a commercial remodel with shelving, fixtures and displays, light demolition, or a large property or community cleanup. It fits most residential driveways and commercial job sites, and it holds about nine pickup truck loads, or roughly 170 to 190 standard trash bags.
The sides are six feet high, so most of what goes in is carried or thrown rather than tipped from a wheelbarrow. Contractors with a crew do not mind; a homeowner working alone may prefer a 20 and a swap.
Space needed
a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved lot or compact gravel, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to maneuver and place it, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and power lines
Big renovations, cleanouts and commercial remodels
Taking several rooms back to the studs fills a 30 in a hurry: the cabinets, the doors, the drywall, framing and flooring. Estate and move-out cleanouts land here too, and so do commercial remodels with shelving, fixtures, packaging and displays, and light demolition with doors, windows and lumber. One thing to sort before an estate cleanout: mattresses, box springs, clothing, bedding and curtains cannot go in. Massachusetts has banned mattresses and textiles from disposal since 1 November 2022, and MassDEP says even one mattress fails a load. Tell us how many there are and we will talk through where they go.
Knocking a building down takes paperwork before it takes a dumpster. MassDEP requires an asbestos survey by an asbestos inspector before demolition or renovation work (310 CMR 7.15), asbestos removal needs a notice filed ten working days ahead, and demolishing anything other than a residential building of fewer than 20 units needs a construction and demolition notice ten working days ahead too. In Norton, the Board of Health wants a pest control statement before a building comes down, the disposal site named before demolition starts, and the debris removed within 15 days of completion (Reg. Ch. 13). We will ask what the building is before we quote.
Weight, swaps and long jobs
About four to five tons — 8,000 to 10,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. With this much volume, dense debris can pass the weight allowance before it reaches the top, so separate heavy material where you can and plan on weight as well as volume. Jobs that run for weeks usually go on a rotation: once the box is full we return for pickup or bring a replacement, so the site never waits. Contractors and commercial customers can ask about ongoing rotations and scheduled service.
Suitability
Is the 30 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 30 yard for
- Multi-room and whole-house renovations
- Estate and move-out cleanouts
- Commercial remodels — shelving, fixtures, packaging, displays
- Light demolition — doors, windows, framing
- Large property and community cleanups
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, dirt, brick or tile — a smaller box is safer and more cost-effective
- Mattresses, box springs and textiles (banned from disposal since 2022)
- Sites without room for a 22-foot container and the truck
- Asbestos, paint, chemicals, fuel, tires, batteries or medical waste
Placing a 30 yard container on a Norton-area property
It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved lot or compact gravel, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to maneuver and place it, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and power lines. In Norton we found no Town permit rule, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway or lot, so the driveway comes first. The street is different: the Town bylaw requires written permission from the Select Board before part of a public way is used for rubbish or building material during building work, on condition that the spot is lit from sunset to sunrise, guarded with a railing, restored afterward and covered by an agreement to indemnify the Town (§135-7), and no obstruction may be left blocking travel on a street or sidewalk (§135-8). Route 123 (Old Colony Road) and Route 140 are state highway, where MassDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. The Norton Board of Health also requires every dumpster in town to carry the company name, phone number and an ID number and allows no refuse on the ground around it (Reg. Ch. 11 §11.4). Other towns have their own rules — Taunton wants dumpster locations approved by its Board of Health, Easton asks the customer for a permit for each temporary dumpster, Sharon wants dumpsters on an impervious surface, and Plainville keeps roll-offs 5 feet back from the edge of a public way. Check your HOA too. Plywood under the wheels adds protection, and protective boards may be available on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
30 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
Is a 30 yard too big for a house?
For a normal cleanout, often yes — a whole-home cleanout is usually a 20. For a remodel that strips several rooms, or a whole estate, no — that volume arrives faster than people expect. We will tell you honestly which it is.
Can I do swaps on a 30 yard?
Yes. Once the container is full we return for pickup or bring a replacement, and contractors and commercial customers with ongoing work can set up scheduled rotations at the start.
How much weight is included in a 30 yard?
Most rentals include about four to five tons, depending on the debris type. A 30 full of tile, dirt or concrete can go past that well before it reaches the top edge, so we estimate heavy loads with you during the quote.
Do I need a permit for a 30 yard?
On your own driveway or lot in Norton we found no Town permit rule for a roll-off. The street is different: Norton's bylaw requires written permission from the Select Board before part of a public way is used for rubbish or building material during building work, with lighting at night, a railing or guard, the road restored afterward and an agreement to indemnify the Town (§135-7). Route 123 (Old Colony Road) and Route 140 in Norton are state highway, where state law bars any obstruction without MassDOT's written permit (M.G.L. c.81 §21) and MassDOT has no permit type for a container, so there the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own rules — Easton, for example, asks the customer for a Board of Health permit for each temporary dumpster. Each town page says what that town asks for.
