Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Middleborough

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Second largest by area — 72.16 square miles, the Town says.
  • Crossroads — the Town lists Route 44 to Plymouth, Routes 28 and 495 to Cape Cod, Route 79 to Fall River and Routes 18 and 105 to New Bedford, and the MBTA's Old Colony commuter rail.
  • Cranberry Capital — the Town's own page calls Middleborough the Cranberry Capital of the World.
  • Brook Street Landfill — 207 Plympton Street, residents only, $30 for 12 visits a calendar year, and no vehicles with commercial registration.

What comes out of Middleborough properties

Roofs in 10s and 20s, yard and brush clean-ups in 15s and 20s, remodels in 20s, estate clean-outs in 30s, construction and demolition in 30s and 40s, and a 10 or 15 for concrete, brick and dirt — heavy loads are limited to the smaller boxes. Contractors can't use the Town landfill at all: it turns away vehicles with commercial registration. MassDEP bans asphalt pavement, brick and concrete, metal, wood (from landfills), clean drywall, mattresses and textiles (since 1 November 2022), whole tires, large appliances, TV and monitor picture tubes and lead-acid batteries from disposal (310 CMR 19.017), so mixed construction loads go to a C&D handling facility that sorts them. MassDEP says even one mattress can fail a load — tell us before you load a mattress or an appliance.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Middleborough

Who may haul — the rule that matters: Middleborough's Board of Health Private Hauler Rules (effective August 6, 2016) say no one may collect or haul solid waste or recyclables in town without a Board permit (§4a), with a $200 fee for haulers offering scheduled residential collection (§5) and public liability insurance of at least $500,000 (§6). The rules don't mention dumpsters or roll-offs. We found no exclusive franchise. We're licensed and insured.

In the street — plan ahead: anyone building, altering, repairing or taking down a building next to a way the Town keeps in repair who wants to put building materials or rubbish on part of it must give the Selectmen at least 14 days' notice before work starts; the Select Board may then grant a permit for no more than 90 days, on conditions and security it sets (§239-5), and occupying the way without a written permit is barred (§239-6). So there is no same-day street drop in Middleborough — a driveway is the simple spot.

State highways: nothing may be placed on a MassDOT state highway without MassDOT's written permit (M.G.L. c.81 §21), and MassDOT has no dumpster or container permit type — so on a state highway the container goes on private property. Not every stretch of a numbered route is state-owned, so we check the exact address.

Knocking something down: Massachusetts requires an asbestos survey by an asbestos inspector before demolition or renovation work (310 CMR 7.15(4)), and asbestos removal needs a MassDEP notice filed ten working days before work starts by the licensed abatement contractor. MassDEP's construction/demolition notice (AQ 06) does not apply to residential buildings with fewer than 20 units. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if the survey finds any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Middleborough

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the location, what you are clearing — a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard, a job site — roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

You get a flat-rate quote whenever possible that covers delivery, pickup, disposal, the standard rental period and an included weight allowance. If a smaller box does the job we will say so. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on a flat, stable surface rather than the lawn. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home.

  4. Step 4: Load it on your schedule

Keep it level with the top edge or below and keep the banned items out — paint and solvents, oils and fuel, chemicals, batteries, tires, propane tanks and gas cylinders, medical waste, asbestos, mattresses and textiles, and fridges or other large appliances. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We haul it and dispose of it right

The load is covered and goes to an approved facility, with metal, concrete, asphalt, clean wood and yard waste recycled through Massachusetts facilities whenever possible. You get your driveway back the way you left it.
