Why a cleanout needs its own dumpster

Dragging a cleanout to the curb a few bags at a time, or making trip after trip to a disposal site, drains your weekends. In Norton there is no town trash pickup to lean on: we found no Town contract or transfer station, the Highway Department takes listed items on two Saturday mornings a month, and its curbside large-item pickup is by appointment on Mondays for an extra $10. The towns around Norton set tight limits too — Attleboro and North Attleborough charge per item for bulky pickups, Seekonk's Bulky Waste Day is "NOT intended to be an alternative to getting a dumpster", and Norfolk's DPW no longer rents containers. A roll-off in the driveway changes the rhythm: you work continuously, toss as you go, and we haul it away in one pickup.

Match the size to the house

For a garage or attic cleanout, a 10 is often enough; a 15 yard handles basement and garage cleanouts and multi-room cleanouts, and works well for moving and estate cleanouts. A whole-home cleanout is usually a 20 yard, which handles bulky items and high debris volume, or a 30 yard when there is a lot to clear, for estate and move-out cleanouts with furniture and household junk. Warehouse or large property cleanouts can call for a 40. Furniture is bulky and light, so volume usually decides a cleanout before weight does. The sizing guide has the full table.

Plan, sort and work room by room

Walk the house first and list the spaces you are tackling. Then run every item through four buckets — keep, donate, drop-off, toss — before anything goes in the bin. The drop-off bucket is the Massachusetts one: mattresses, clothing, big appliances, old TVs, tires and batteries cannot go in the box. Having the container on site makes the toss decision fast, because there is no pile of "maybe" items building up in the yard. Finish one space before moving to the next, starting with the one that bothers you most, often the garage.

  • Garage and storage: old tools, broken equipment, leftover building materials — tires and car batteries go to the drop-off pile.
  • Kitchen: cabinets and cookware you no longer use — fridges and freezers go elsewhere (below).
  • Bedrooms and closets: furniture and boxes go in; mattresses, box springs and clothing go to the drop-off or donation pile.
  • Attic and basement: stored boxes, holiday decorations, keepsakes to sort.
  • Yard: branches, shrubs, old fencing, patio furniture — brush and leaves as their own load.

Time it to the job

Most rentals include a standard 7-day rental period, which covers most single-house cleanouts, and your quote confirms the days. Need longer? We can often extend for an additional daily or weekly fee, depending on availability, or swap a full box for an empty one. Finish early and we can arrange an earlier pickup. You do not need to be home for delivery or pickup, as long as we have clear placement instructions and the area is accessible — useful when you are clearing a family member's home from out of town. If the cleanout is in Easton, a temporary dumpster permit runs 30 days with one renewal (§355-13), and North Attleborough caps open construction containers at 30 days without a variance (§397-4A).

What cleanout junk can go in

Most household cleanout material is fine for a roll-off: furniture of every kind, boxes and general junk, old flooring and carpet, cabinets, small non-hazardous appliances, cardboard kept together, and yard debris as its own load. Load smart: break down bulky items, spread the weight evenly rather than piling it at one end, fill the gaps with smaller pieces, and keep the load level with or below the top edge so it can be covered and safely hauled. If the cleanout turns into a remodel — cabinets coming off the walls, flooring coming up — tell us, because household junk and construction debris are different loads, and an older house may need an asbestos survey before any renovation (310 CMR 7.15(4)).

Set these aside, and where they go

A few things turn up in every cleanout that cannot go in the box. Mattresses and box springs have been banned from disposal in Massachusetts since November 1, 2022; the Norton Highway Department takes them for $50 each, and our junk removal service lists mattresses among the items we remove. Clothing, bedding and other textiles are banned too — donate them, or take clothing to the Highway Department at no charge. Fridges, freezers and A/C units need the refrigerant recovered first (40 CFR 82.155); the Highway Department takes appliances with Freon for $15 and other large appliances for $5. TVs and computer monitors go to the Highway Department too, at $20 to $40 by size. Car batteries are $2 and tires $7 for a car. Paint, pesticides and gasoline are not taken there, so use a household hazardous waste collection. The Highway Department drop-off runs on the 2nd and 4th Saturday, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. — call 508-285-0239 first. Usable furniture and household items can be donated, and our junk removal team donates eligible items whenever possible. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.

Driveways, HOAs and the street

We found no Norton permit, time limit or surface rule for a roll-off on your own driveway. A driveway, gravel area or paved surface works best, and plywood or boards under the dumpster help protect it. If your home is in an HOA, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays visible or where it sits, so check before delivery day and let us know about any tight access. Some nearby towns regulate the dumpster even on private property: Easton wants a permit for each dumpster and a spot at least 5 feet from the lot line and 15 feet from the house (§355-15), Taunton's rules call for Board approval of the location and a fence around dumpsters in residential areas (§3), and Sharon wants it on concrete, asphalt or another hard surface (§300-3.11). In Taunton and Easton we check the Board of Health rules before booking.

The street is a different matter. In Norton it takes written permission from the Select Board, with lights at night and a railing or guard (§135-7). In Attleboro occupying a street or sidewalk carries a charge (§16-3.2), Dighton needs a written Selectmen's permit (Art. VII §5), and Middleborough needs 14 days' notice (§239-5). On state highways such as Route 123 and Route 140, MassDOT has no permit for a container. For a cleanout, the driveway is almost always the answer. The permit guide has every town we list.

Delivery day, or let us do the lifting

Our dumpsters are driveway-friendly. Give us a clear, flat spot with room for the truck to get in and no low branches or wires overhead, move cars out of the way, and mark the placement spot if you will not be there. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime — Seekonk allows dumpster emptying from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. in residential areas, and Sharon and Plainville from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you would rather not lift a thing, ask about our junk removal service, where our team handles all the loading, hauling and disposal and recycles and donates eligible materials whenever possible. Call (508) 952-9763 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — and ask about same-day delivery if the cleanout is already under way: we offer same-day and next-day delivery throughout Norton and surrounding communities when availability allows.

Frequently asked questions

What size dumpster do I need for a house cleanout?

For a whole-home cleanout, a 20 yard is the usual fit, or a 30 when there is a lot to clear or it is an estate cleanout. A garage or attic usually needs a 10 or 15. Tell us what the home looks like and we will recommend the right size.

Can I throw away furniture and mattresses?

Furniture, yes. Mattresses and box springs, no: Massachusetts has banned them from disposal since November 1, 2022. The Norton Highway Department takes them for a fee, or ask about our junk removal service.

What about appliances, TVs and clothing?

Set them aside. Large appliances, fridges, picture-tube TVs and textiles are all on the Massachusetts waste-ban list. The Norton Highway Department takes appliances, TVs and clothing on its drop-off Saturdays, and our junk removal service takes appliances with the Freon properly removed.

How long can I keep a cleanout dumpster?

Most rentals include a standard 7-day rental period. If you need more time, we can often extend for an additional daily or weekly fee, depending on availability; finish early and we can arrange an earlier pickup.
